The Sun Inn

The pub at the pond end of Church Road, looking out over Barnes Green and the water. Start here if you have visitors to impress and only one afternoon in which to do it. On a clear evening the outside seats go first, so arrive before the school run finishes rather than after it.
The White Hart

Open Monday to Thursday 11am to 11pm, Friday and Saturday until midnight, Sunday noon to 11pm. The riverside terrace is the draw, and nothing else in Barnes puts you quite this close to the river with a drink in your hand. If you are walking in from Barnes Bridge, time the walk to end here.
The Bull's Head

Open Monday to Thursday 11am to 11pm, with food served Monday to Saturday until 10pm. The Bull's Head has its own Jazz Room and a jazz club in it — a rarity on this stretch of the river, and the reason to choose it. The pub to pick when you want the evening to have a point to it beyond the pint.
The Coach & Horses

Open Monday to Saturday 11am to 11pm, Sunday noon to 11pm. A large garden built around a Burger Shack, and a private room, The Stables, that seats up to 80. This is the one to book when there are more of you than a table will take, and the one to choose with children and a warm afternoon.
The Brown Dog

Open Tuesday to Sunday, closed Mondays. Independently owned, and tucked into the Little Chelsea backstreets rather than sitting on a main road. Cross Street is a backstreet, which is rather the point. Worth booking at the weekend.
The Bridge
204 Castelnau. thebridgeinbarnes.co.uk
Dog-friendly, with eight boutique bedrooms — useful if you have people staying and no spare room. It sits on Castelnau between the Green and Hammersmith Bridge, which makes it the natural stop at either end of that walk.
The Red Lion

A Fuller's pub at the top of Castelnau, where the traffic turns for Hammersmith Bridge. There is a children's menu served until 6pm, and the week has a shape to it: Steak & Wine Tuesdays, and a Wednesday fish, chips and Chablis pairing at £79.50 for those inclined.
How to choose
For the river, the White Hart first and the Bull's Head second. For the pond and the Green, the Sun Inn. For a garden with children in tow, or a table for a dozen, the Coach & Horses. For live music, the Bull's Head. For something independent and off the main road, the Brown Dog. For a bed at the end of it, the Bridge.
